Why do we like music?
Why do we like music, or rather, why do we prefer music? In an age when technology allows us easy access to video, we still prefer music. We often prefer text to voice communication, using instant messaging applications instead of making a phone call. The Video iPod was just launched, and I have a strong feeling it won't fly. Sure, people will want to carry the occasional clip around and watch last nights Daily Show while they commute (think Tivo), but it seems to me like video simply doesn't have the same appeal as music. Why?

I think it's because music can be a distraction, a second activity, just simple background. I listen to music while I work, drive, study, read, hang out, at the bar. In the 70's people put on headphones and listened to Floyd. And some classical enthusiasts might listen as an activity. But video requires your full attention. You have to keep your head in place, you can't look at other things. And video, when its not a music video, when its a TV show or movie requires even more attention because it's words, not sound. There are explanations, arguments, reasoning, narratives. Zonking out for 10 seconds of a song ain't a problem. But 10 seconds of a movie or the Daily Show could confuse you, lose your place, etc, etc, etc
I think that's a very good point: video requires more processing power, because more inputs are involved--audio & visual, not to mention all the additional processing that has to deal with what's going on onscreen
